Living with Diabetes Presents Day-to-Day Challenges
Wyoming Medical Center’s Diabetes Care Center is available to all people with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance along with their family members. Individual and group instruction is provided by certified healthcare professionals. Appointments can be made by calling 577-2592 Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Please contact your physician to coordinate services.
Could you have diabetes?
According to the American Diabetes Association, there are more than 20 million people in the U.S. who have diabetes, 28,000 of them in Wyoming. It is estimated that more than six million people are not aware they have the disease. It is important for adults of any age who have one or more of the following risk factors to be screened for type 2 diabetes.
Risk factors:
- Lack of Physical Activity
- Family history of diabetes
- Overweight
- High-risk ethnicity group
- Delivered a baby weighing 9lb. or more
- Diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Low HDL cholesterol levels
- High triglycerides
- History of cardiovascular disease
In those without risk factors, diabetes testing should begin at age 45.
** If tests are normal, repeat testing is recommended at 3-year intervals.
Improved Health and Fewer Complications
It is important to update diabetes management skills regularly. Studies have confirmed that people with diabetes who stay informed and practice effective self-management have a better chance of a healthier and happier life along with fewer medical problems caused by the disease.
The Diabetes Care Center focuses on all types of diabetes (Type 1, Type 2, Gestational)., newly diagnosed, poorly controlled, patients who feel they need additional help managing their diabetes, or those who have had prior education but wish to improve control or recieve new information from the diabetes community.

Group Diabetes Self-Management Classes
Four, 2-hour group classes, taught in an interactive, hands-on-way. Classes cover all aspects of Type 2 diabetes management.
Diabetes Prevention Program / Group Lifestyle Balance
Program aimed at preventing type 2 diabetes through diet and exercise. This 12-week program has been shown to improve blood sugars, reduce weight, and decrease or delay the development of type 2 diabetes. Click here to learn more about the program.
Carbohydrate Counting
Taught by one of our Registered Dietitians, this class provides step-by-step instructions for how to accurately count carbohydrates, plan diabetic-friendly meals, read labels, and follow the American Dietetics Association Guidelines for a healthy diet.
Outreach
The Diabetes Care Center at Wyoming Medical Center sponsors outreach education sessions throughout Casper and surrounding communities. Presentations are offered for schools or individuals who wish to become more familiar with diabetes, updates on diabetes management, new research developments and diabetes equipment and supplies.

Free Blood Pressure Screening
Find out what your numbers mean to your heart health.
February is National Heart Month and Wyoming Medical Center along with the Heart Center of Wyoming is promoting your heart's health by holding free blood pressure screenings every Thursday in February from 1-3pm at the Cardiopulmonary Wellness Center, on the lower level of the Casper Surgical Center at 1201 East 3rd Street.
